How do ground verification monitors work and why are they important?

In chemical handling and transfer, grounding the vehicle and bonding the equipment can save lives and equipment. Nearly all types of chemicals and bulk products that are shipped, pumped, transferred, loaded, and unloaded can be hazardous due to static build-up. The friction of the material builds up a static charge and that charge can jump gaps creating a spark. That spark can ignite fumes or airborne dust that can cause a chain reaction that has the potential of burning down an entire facility and putting many lives in danger.

Ground verification systems confirm the vehicle, vessel, or container is properly grounded by displaying a green light and allowing the transport of the chemical or bulk product. If a ground is not detected or there is an interruption in grounding, the grounding monitor will display a red light and safely shut down the loading/unloading terminal, eliminating the risk of human error.

Earth-Rite® PLUS Ground Monitoring System

The loading and unloading of tank trucks with large quantities of chemicals and powders generate static electricity. If left to accumulate on a tank truck, it could discharge electrostatic sparks that could ignite combustible gases, vapors, and dust. However, that could be prevented by grounding the tank truck, as it ensures there can be no build of static electricity on the tank or chassis of the truck. And the most reliable way of grounding your tank trucks is with an Earth-Rite system.

The Earth-Rite PLUS system grounds and bonds a broad range of equipment at risk of igniting combustible gases and vapors. Along with achieving Class I, Div. 1 approvals for all gas and liquid-vapor groups, the Earth-Rite PLUS ensures a 10 ohm or less connection is continuously present between the grounded object and a designated grounding point, a feature that helps demonstrate compliance with many national grounding and bonding regulations.

Earth-Rite RTR Tri-Mode Ground Monitoring System

The Earth-Rite RTR (Road Tanker Recognition) system uses patented technology to establish three key inputs required to be in place before loading or unloading any product. The trip-mode system means that only when the three key inputs are met will the Earth-Rite RTR system allow its pair of dry change-over contacts to engage the pump (or any other equipment that’s interlocked with the system) to control the flow of product being loaded/unloaded.

In addition, the Earth-Rite RTR eliminates any static electricity generated by the loading operation. This can prove especially beneficial, as conductive metal objects like tank cars, skids, and IBCs that come into contact with electrostatically charged liquids can accumulate hazardous levels of electrostatic charge.

Ground Verification Monitor Model 8030 for Grounding Only Applications

Civacon’s new Ground Verification Monitor (Model 8030) visually confirms a ground connection between the transport and the loading terminal, giving you peace of mind and, more importantly, safety. The new model uses technology that’s compatible with transport ground systems used today.

The monitor has a 5 amperage, 240 volt relay output for control of terminal automation systems (T.A.S.) or pump control devices when used as a stand-alone system. And the monitor utilizes green and red lamps for visual status indication. When a proper ground signal is present, the green lamp will light and a permissive signal will allow the load rack to be operational. If the ground is lost, however, the red lamp will come on, indicating a non-permissive state, and the monitor will shut down the loading operation.
